On the fifth day of our Xinjiang trip in 2023, we came to the Urho Devil City near the Karamay Oilfield.
This place is similar to the colorful beach I saw yesterday, and it is also a famous Yardang landform. The difference is that it is very dry. The special thing here is that there are all kinds of strange stones, which present a variety of strange shapes under the natural carving, so that people can use their imagination to make up images that are close to them.
There are many ghost cities in Xinjiang, and they are all experiences of Yardang landform.
Yardang landform is also called wind-eroded ridge, and “Yardang” means “a small hill with steep walls” in Uighur. It consists of a series of equal ridges and grooves, with a height of half a meter to several meters and a length of several hundred meters. Due to the abrasive effect of the wind, the lower part of the hill will be subject to strong erosion, gradually forming a concave shape, forming the Yardang landform, some of which look like ancient castles, and want to be called the Devil City.
The earliest history can be traced back to the 3rd century BC; after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Seventh Division of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps moved to Kuitun; in 1978, the Home Reclamation Bureau was established; in 1983, Kuitun City was separated from the Seventh Division of Agriculture, and it was directly under the jurisdiction of Ili Prefecture.
The majority of the city’s population is Han Chinese.
