On the ninth day of our Xinjiang trip in 2023, we came to the hottest place in China-the Turpan Basin.
We will enjoy a Uyghur special lunch here, and then go to the hottest mountain in China - Huoyan Mountain (Flame Mountain). Afterwards, I will go to a Uighur family to learn about their ethnic customs and their grape crops. Finally, return to Urumqi.
The Gushi people were the first to live in the Turpan Basin. After the Han Dynasty united with the countries of the Western Regions in 138 BC, they jointly fought against the Xiongnu. Since then, it has been closely connected with the Central Plains until the establishment of Xinjiang in the Qing Dynasty, and gradually became a district or city-level administrative unit.
Turpan has abundant sunshine, abundant heat and extreme dryness. It is known as “Fire Island” and “Wind Bank”. The year-round sunshine exceeds 3,000 hours, and the annual solar radiation is second only to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The annual average temperature is -6.6 to 32.5 ℃, the highest temperature in history is 48.1 ℃, and the surface temperature has a record of 82.3 ℃. There is a local saying that “eggs are baked in a sand nest” and “noodles are baked on a stone”.
