On the afternoon of the sixth day of our Xinjiang trip in 2023, we arrived in Yining, the capital of Ili Autonomous Prefecture, which is a multi-ethnic city.

After we had dinner and checked into the hotel, before it was dark, we went to Liuxing Street in the city center to experience the unique environment here. Liuxing Street not only has Internet celebrity restaurants, but also a place for leisure and relaxation in the lives of Yining people. We will go to the handmade ice cream shop in Grandam, taste the delicious ice cream in an environment that combines European style and Western characteristics, and then continue shopping on Six Star Street.

• Ili History

The history of Ili can be traced back to the 3rd century BC. The Ili Valley was the area where the Sakya (Scythians) and Usun people were active. After that, the rise of the Huns forced the Yuezhi to move westward and seize the Ili Valley. The Xiongnu took in the rest of the Wusun tribe, and the Wusun people established the Wusun Kingdom after recovering the Ili River Valley. After that, he formed an alliance with the Western Han Dynasty in Wusun to contain the Xiongnu. Since then, Wusun has been more or less connected with the Central Plains.

In the Qing Dynasty, after the Junggar tribe was conquered, a central government agency, Ili General, was established in Ili. It was once invaded by the Russian Empire in 1871 and was not returned until 1880.

In 1914, Ili was changed directly under the jurisdiction of Xinjiang Province, and Ningyuan County was renamed Yining County.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture was established in 1954, with Yining as its capital.

• Ili Climate

Ili is in the middle of the Ili River Valley, surrounded by Tianshan Mountains, with four distinct seasons and abundant sunshine.

Ili is very suitable for tourism from April to October. Even in July, the hottest month, the average temperature is 15°C to 31°C. December to February is relatively cold, with an average temperature of -12°C to 0°C.
