In October 2023, on the first day of our trip to Iran, we visited the Freedom Monument and the former US Embassy to learn more about the Iranian Islamic Revolution 44 years ago.
You will also go to the Iranian Carpet Museum to learn about carpet weaving techniques since Persian times and appreciate the exquisite carpets that are hundreds of years old.
(Persian: برج آزادی, Borj-e Āzādi, means Freedom Tower), formerly known as Shah’s Memorial Tower (Persian: برج شهیاد, Borj-e Šahyād)
The tower is located in the monument of Azadi Square in Tehran, the capital of Iran, and is a landmark building in Tehran. The tower is 45 meters high and covered with marble from Isfahan. It was commissioned by Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire, and was completed in 1971.
The former Embassy of the United States of America in Tehran, Iran
Design of the embassy began in 1948 and was completed in 1951. After the Islamic Revolution broke out in Iran in 1979, the embassy was occupied in November and 52 Americans were detained. The hostages were not released until the death of the Shah who fled to Egypt 444 days later.
Six other people escaped during the occupation of the embassy and were rescued by the US government. The award-winning film “Argo” was adapted from this incident.
Since 2017, the embassy, which has long been no longer in use, has been open to the public for visits.
The Iranian Carpet Museum is located on North Kargar Street on the north side of Laleh Park in Tehran, covering an area of 12,000 square meters and a building area of 3,400 square meters.
The museum was built in 1978 (the year before the Islamic Revolution) at the request of the last Queen Farah Pahlavi.
The museum has a collection of more than a hundred carpets from all over Iran, from Kashan, Kerman, Isfahan, Tabriz and many more. Some of them are hundreds of years old, and the oldest ones are even 400 years old. There is also a library with a collection of 3,500 books recording history and culture.
