We came to Persepolis, the spring capital of the Achaemenid Dynasty more than two thousand years ago.
Although it has long been in ruins, it is an excellent place for us to have a glimpse of the ancient Persian Empire and its civilization.
Persepolis had a palace complex and a citadel that served as a center for governance and ceremonial activities and reflected the Achaemenid architectural style.
Emperors who once ruled in Persepolis include Xerxes, Darius, etc., and they are all buried near the city.
The earliest of these buildings dates back to 515 BC, and was captured and burned to the ground by the Greek Alexander the Great in 330 BC.
An inscription left by the Sassanid Dynasty six hundred years after the city was destroyed called the ruins of Persepolis the “Hundred Pillars”. We did see a lot of pillars in the ruins.
The name Persepolis comes from Greek, meaning the city of the Persians, and the ancient Persians called it 𐎱𐎠𐎼𐎿, which means “Persia”.
