There are two famous royal buildings in Isfahan’s Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque on the east side and the Ali Qapu Palace on the west side.

They represent the top level of craftsmanship of the Safavid Dynasty 400 years ago and demonstrate the wealth that Isfahan brought to the Persian Empire when it was the central city of the Silk Road.

• Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque

The Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque was a mosque exclusively for the royal family until the 1960s when public access was allowed. Compared with the other mosque on the square, its decoration is more exquisite, but it is restrained enough because of Islam.

• Ali Qapu Palace

Ali Qapu Palace was originally just a gate into and out of the square. It was continuously expanded in the following 70 years, and finally formed its current five-story scale with a large platform. The palace’s murals are exquisite and naturalistic, in stark contrast to the splendor of the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque across the square.
